FLORIDA DRONE COMPLIANCE CHECKLIST

A practical starting point for companies and agencies operating drones in Florida. Use it to identify gaps before pilots are sent into the field.

Checklist

CORE ITEMS TO VERIFY

This page is informational, not legal advice. DTS can help turn these items into a training and SOP plan for your team.

Pilot Credentials

FAA Part 107 & Recurrent Training

  • Remote pilots hold current FAA Part 107 certificates
  • Recurrent training status is documented
  • Pilots understand night operations, operations over people, and waiver limits
  • Visual observers know their duties and communication protocol
Aircraft

Registration & Equipment Records

  • Aircraft registration numbers are current and visible where required
  • Maintenance checks and battery logs are retained
  • Firmware, geofencing, and payload status are reviewed before deployment
  • Remote ID requirements are considered for each aircraft
Airspace

Authorization & Site Review

  • Controlled airspace is checked before each mission
  • LAANC or FAA authorization is obtained when required
  • TFRs, NOTAMs, weather, and nearby heliports are reviewed
  • Takeoff, landing, and emergency zones are defined before flight
Operations

SOPs, Insurance & Records

  • Written SOPs cover mission planning, crew roles, and emergency response
  • Insurance requirements are reviewed for client, site, or agency work
  • Flight logs, incident reports, and client approvals are retained
  • Data handling, privacy, and property access rules are documented
Florida Factors

LOCAL CONDITIONS MATTER

Florida drone programs regularly operate near airports, coastal weather, dense urban areas, public events, construction sites, and emergency response zones. A compliant program needs more than a certificate; it needs repeatable field judgment.

  • Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and coastal markets include complex airspace
  • Weather changes quickly and should be part of every go/no-go decision
  • Public safety, infrastructure, and government sites may require added approvals
  • Client deliverables should be defined before the flight plan is finalized
