From Aviation Mechanic
to National Drone Authority
James Tobon's aviation career began on the ground — as a licensed FAA Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) mechanic, issued through George T. Baker Aviation School. That foundation in aircraft systems, airworthiness, and regulatory compliance gave him a depth of technical understanding that most drone instructors simply don't have.
When commercial UAS rules launched under FAA Part 107 in 2016, James recognized the opportunity — and the gap. The industry needed training that went beyond memorizing regulations, built around real operational experience, real missions, and real government accountability. He founded Drone Training School to fill that gap, and Tree Visual Concepts LLC became the legal entity behind one of the most trusted drone training operations in the country.
Today, James holds FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, NDAA Blue List Certified Operator and Reseller status, and restricted airspace authorization for Miami International Airport — credentials that put DTS in the same compliance tier as government drone contractors. His programs have been deployed to U.S. Coast Guard personnel, SWAT teams, fire departments, two Caribbean government ministries, and enterprise clients including Lennar Corporation and Florida Power & Light.
When national news outlets need an expert to explain drone safety, regulations, or incident analysis, they call James. He has appeared on Noticias Telemundo (national broadcast), WESH 2 NBC Orlando, ClickOrlando, and Yahoo News — always as the authoritative source, not a talking head.
